Anyone who has had construction done in their home or business has probably seen a lot of plastic sheeting. But what is plastic sheeting used for in construction? Well, there are many kinds of flexible plastic sheeting used on construction sites in Brooklyn, NY in various ways. Plastic is strong, but very lightweight, which makes it super useful in construction. Here are some of the kinds of plastic sheeting used in construction and what they’re good for.
Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) sheeting
Probably the most common kind of plastic sheeting, LDPE is very flexible and thin. Most sheets range from .5- to 40-millimeter in thickness. Because it’s not as dense or strong as other kinds of plastic sheeting, LDPE can suffer from tears and punctures a little easier than other kinds. But that doesn’t mean it’s not extremely useful—otherwise it wouldn’t be so common! This kind of sheeting is used for everything from agricultural sheeting, surface protector films and pond and canal liners to tarps, packaging and more.
Linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) sheeting
Similar to LDPE sheeting, this blend has even more flexibility. LLDPE is more pliable than LDPE, and can stretch more while being even stronger. That makes it great for things like carpet liners and pond liners, which need to be strong but very thin and pliable.
Medium-density polyethylene (MDPE) sheeting
This is the least commonly used form of polyethylene for flexible plastic sheeting. It’s definitely stronger and more puncture-resistant than LDPE and LLDPE, but it is less flexible. For that reason, it is often blended with the other kinds in making plastic sheeting so that it lends strength but is not as stiff and unforgiving as a straight MDPE plastic sheet.
High-density polyethylene (HDPE or HD) sheeting
High-density polyethylene is even tougher than medium-density polyethylene. The strongest and most chemical-resistant of the bunch, it is used in a wide range of applications. It is often used at an industrial level because of its protective qualities, and tends to range from 12 to 100 millimeters thick. Most golf course ponds are lined with HDPE. Anything where chemical resistance is needed—like root barriers, secondary containment liners, industrial canal liners and things like that—features HDPE because of its chemical resistance and strength. It can also be found in thinner varieties, and is very popular for its strength.
